Reporting verbs
Los reporting verbs son aquellos que utilizamos en el reported speech o estilo indirecto para introducir lo que nos ha dicho otra persona. Por ejemplo:
Mary told me she would be studying.
Mary me dijo que estaría estudiando.
En este caso, el verbo tell (decir, contar) es el reporting verb. De hecho, tell, es uno de los reporting verbs más utilizados junto a say (decir).
demás de tell y say, existen otros muchos reporting verbs que aportan muchos más matices que los dos ya mencionados. En este post vamos a ver una lista con algunos de ellos y ejemplos de su uso.
Challenge: retar
My sister challenged me to a tennis match.
Mi hermana me retó a un partido de tenis.
Admit: admitir
He admitted cheating on the test.
Admitió haber copiado en el examen.
Advise: aconsejar
My father advised me to keep on studying.
Mi padre me aconsejó seguir estudiando.
Agree: estar de acuerdo, acordar
Laura agreed to go to bed earlier in exchange for some sweets.
Laura acordó irse antes a la cama a cambio de unos dulces.
Claim: reclamar, reivindicar, afirmar
The company claims it is not responsible for the pollution in the river.
La empresa afirma no ser responsable de la contaminación del río.
Decide: decidir
She decided to take up the English lessons.
Ella decidió retomar sus clases de inglés.
Demand: exigir
Paul demanded that Peter take the trash out.
Paul exigió que Peter sacara la basura.
Encourage: animar
My teacher encouraged me to keep studying English.
Mi profesora me animó a seguir estudiando inglés.
Insist on: insistir
Charlie insisted on paying the bill.
Charlie insistió en pagar la cuenta.
Instruct: informar/indicar algo a alguien
Katie instructed the police how the burglar looked like.
Katie informó a la policía de cómo era el ladrón.
Invite: invitar
My colleague invited me to her wedding.
Mi compañera de trabajo me ha invitado a su boda.
Offer: ofrecer
My brother offered to give us a ride in his new car.
Mi hermano se ofreció a darnos una vuelta en su coche nuevo.
Order: ordenar
The doctor ordered Tom to quit smoking.
El doctor le ordenó a Tom dejar de fumar.
Promise: prometer
He promised to come back soon.
Prometió volver pronto.
Refuse: rechazar, negarse
He refused to leave the meeting until the issue was totally solved.
Se negó a marcharse de la reunión hasta que no se solución completamente el problema.
Remind: recordar
Mom reminded me to call granny.
Mamá me recordó que llamara a la yaya.
Suggest: sugerir
Marge suggested going out for dinner.
Marge sugirió salir a cenar.
Warn: avisar, advertir
That woman over there warned us that the train might be late.
Aquella mujer nos advirtió de que el tren puede ir con retraso.
